880...Gotta Ask:Why/How R Tories Ahead In Polls?

As Detroit and Montreal are to cities, they are where the unthinkable happens on a regular basis; the Conservative Party of Canada is to political parties, they are where the unthinkable happens on a regular basis.

Yet, and let's be realistic folks, if an election were held today Stephen Harper and his crew would get more seats than the Liberals and form yet another minority parliament.

What the f'ck do these guys have to do to convince Canadians that they are unfit to govern?

Take this week. The Health Minister's department sends body bags, properly called post mortem kits because it is more than just a bag, there are toe tags and everything, before vaccine to remote communities in Manitoba, remote aboriginal communities.

They are going to skate. Sure, the native leaders are pissed. "It was insulting," said David Harper, Grand Chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, quoted in today's Globe and Mail. "Body bags may be part of flu preparations, but so is medications. Why do we get body bags before we get medication?" The chattering classes are also pissed but the inbetweens, the ones who decide elections, not so much.

Wait, there is more.

The former national caucus chair, married to a minister, Helena Guergis, Rahim Jaffer, got busted for drinking and driving and cocaine. What makes this ironic in the GOP kind of way is Mr. Jaffer, the only Conservative to lose in Alberta last year, pinned his electoral hopes in 2008, as reported on Global National last night, on smearing the NDP as pro drugs with attack ads. The arrest of an anti drug champion on multiple drug charges is, well, ironic, doncha think?

Yet the Conservatives are going to skate and spin their way out of this too and continue to lead in the polls.

WTF?

  2. I think it is because Harper govrenment?, has trained seals like the media telling every one, " no one wants an election", and blame Ignatieff for wanting one

  3. But it is probabloy good for democracy and making parliament work that Jack Layton's NDP are no longer just a rump protest party.

Now that they are actually participating in the real world of judging legislation for the merits and benefits to Canadians and contributing amendments and policy ideas they have, in fact, gotten a great deal of respect.

So, instead of a vote for the NDP being just a rump party protest against everything vote they are gowing up into real parliamentarians.

That's the credibility Ignatieff has just thrown away. Now the Liberals are the rump protest party. Very sad.

  4. Because Canada is actually a very conservative nation, despite what you lefties think.

  5. "Body bags may be part of flu preparations, but so is medications. Why do we get body bags before we get medication?"

Because it takes a long time to create and test a vaccine for billions of people around the world, and it won't be available for anybody for a month or two?

  6. It is easy Dan, for the past few years the Liberals have been playing nice while the Cons are play Carl Rove politics. Harper has lied about almost everything and is a tremendous liability to the party but they have never gone after him head on. I say flood the air waves constantly with ads showing Harper lied about income trusts, appointing senators, the recession, deficits, and even about taxes, (because they have overall gone up not down).
The OBama hope strategy only works if you have a very charismatic leader to follow. Without that the liberals need to go for the jugular or loose another election.

  7. The problem is that the Liberals are spending too much time trying to bring down the Tories. Yeah you read that right. In politics the public fast become used to the attacks, and they tune them out. That's why you get no traction when you try and attack the Tories over and over again. The best way to get rid of an opponent is to give him enough rope to hang himself.

The 'body bag' gaffe was departmental, and the ex-Tory Jaffer is an *EX* Tory. You can't hang a party with their old candidates, or else the Tories could ressurect the ghost of Dion and really screw the Liberals over.

Timing is everything, and now is not the time. Yeah you want the Tories gone, but it hasn't been a year yet. With each successive election, the public are getting more and more pissed with the lack of cooperation on the hill. This applies to ALL parties.

Furthermore, there is a huge risk to the Liberals if you pull the plug before you are SURE you can win. If you pull the plug and lose, then you are effectively putting the Harper government back into power for at LEAST two years, if not three. If there is an election triggered by the Liberals this fall, there is no way the public will tolerate another election triggered by the Liberals for at least two years. If you think the voters are mad now (based on the polls) wait until you pop another election on them that has the result the same as what we have now - and then go back to them a year later and do the same thing. You would probably give the Tories a majority going that route.

You can't rush politics. It's like chess, not checkers.

The public aren't ready or willing for an election. If you force them then you may be disappointed at the results.

  8. Here's "the f**k".....: Canadians are idiots.
Seriously. I have no qualms about saying it. Infact, wh are we kidding....? HUMANS are idiots......
they care far more about hockey, Kanye West, Dancing with the former stars, and all this other cacophonous balderdash that fills the airwaves every day. 33 million media-addled nincompoops with glowing hearts.
Even the ones who vote sensibly (meaning, ANYTHING but tory), are not fully into it. I was surprised that 5 and half million people actually made a point of voting for harper. I thought: "Wow. I didn't know there were that many NASCAR fans in Canada...."
Which is why I have no pity for anyone anymore. we deserve the government we get.
we aren't smart enough to fix our roof, so we deserve to have all our furniture ruined.
