Than good legal skills. That is the jist of what John Carpay, the executive director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, wrote in today's Globe and Mail.
He opines that "For a position as important and influential as that held by a Supreme Court justice, the stakes are too high to drain the talent pool of most of its water for the sake of symbolism and sentimentality."
The crux of the matter is Bill C-232 which, if passed by the Senate, will close the six anglo seats on the nine seat Supreme Court to those of us who only speak one language. "Introduced in the House of Commons by bilingual New Democrat Yvon Godin of New Brunswick, this bill makes fluency in French and English mandatory for all future Supreme Court justices. The Bloc Québécois joined the Liberals and the NDP to create majority support for the bill, which passed the House in March."
Insane in the membrane.
Not to mention unfair to the country as a whole; we should want the best jurists on the Supreme Court. The best of the best. A barrier like this is nuts.
