California has over 700 inmates on death row and has executed only 13 since 1977 costing more than $1 billion. Maybe it's time to leave the Dark Ages and kill capital punishment?
Or start killing convicted inmates in bunches.
The Stephen Harpers want to bring in draconian laws, laws that have been proven to be wieldy, ineffective and expensive, to our country and the ultimate in stupid is the death penalty.
Cali hasn't iced someone since Clarence Ray Allen was put to death Jan. 17, 2006, primarily because of lawsuits [cruel and unusual punishment, uh, doh, yeah] and Associated Press quotes San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis as saying "Most of us realize a death sentence at this time is a hollow promise in California."
And it is not just in California; Utah is planning on executing a dude,
Ronnie Lee Gardner, who has been on death row for a quarter century. He is due to get shot in June but you just know something will f'it up. And there are dozens more Ronnie Lee Gardner's in the mix.
These appeals cost beaucoup d'argent, more, much more than keeping someone in jail, even on the Paul Bernardo program.
Next time one of your Tory friends starts talking death penalty show them this.

ReplyDeleteOr maybe they should just execute these criminals instead of having a ridiculously long appeal process.
Presuming these inmates had life sentences, wouldn't it have costed pretty much the same to keep them alive in prison?
ReplyDeleteI am in favor of the death penalty in certain circumstances and I am not a conservative.
How about a referendom, once and for all instead of our "political class" telling us what's good for us.
ReplyDeleteIt costs less to keep someone in prison for life than the death penalty. The appeals process is costly but given the exonerations on actual innocence a shorter appeals process is not really an alternative, unless you are willing to kill innocent people as a cost too.
