3728...Compulsory Voting

Those of you who think we should compel all eligible voters to vote should consider the case of Berthier-Maskinonge, a Quebec riding.

That is the riding that elected Ruth Ellen Brosseau Monday. There has been tons of handwringing about this considering that she not only did not campaign for the riding she has never been there. Ever.

Somehow Ms. Brosseau is being painted the
villan; it is not her fault that the savvy electorate in her new rising voted
for her because.

Because?

  1. Why is everyone picking on her and this riding. What happened in Lethbridge, Alberta is far worse and the voters far dumber.

  2. This really doesn't seem to be an argument against compulsory voting. The answer is obvious: they voted for her because they wanted to support the NDP.

In a system where the average MP is only a party spokesman anyways, I'm really not sure why this is news. Either we reform political parties or we reform the electoral system. Or both. Either way, Little Miss Vegas is a symptom, not the problem.
